Unidirectional (Cardioid) Condenser General Purpose Microphone
 The ATM31a is one of two excellent unidirectional (cardioid) condenser mics from Audio-Technica (the other is the ATM33a below). This one is the slightly larger of of the two and a great favourite here at Solid State. It is ideal for voice-over and provides added warmth when used close up. Great for narration, its sound is similar to far more expensive studio microphones. Its cardioid polar pattern reduces pickup of sounds from the sides and rear, improving isolation of the desired sound source.

Unidirectional (Hypercardioid) Dynamic General Purpose Microphone
 The ATM63HE is one of Audio-Technica's older designs but it is still very difficult to beat as a good, honest general purpose dynamic mic. Perfect when you need more directional control and not as much sensitivity as a condenser (a condenser can give you too much in some situations). Its hypercardioid polar pattern reduces pickup of sounds from the sides and rear, improving isolation of the desired sound source. You will not go far wrong with a good old everyday ATM63HE in your arsenal. You an use it for almost anything and get a good result. And it's as rugged and robust as can be.
