The AT803 is an Industry Standard lapel mic. It provides excellent yet unobtrusive sound pickup for 'talking heads' be they lecturers, TV performers, interviewers or interviewees. Designed for clip-on lavalier and musical instrument use, it features an integral 80 Hz high-pass filter that provides easy switching from a flat frequency response to a low-end roll-off. The microphone operates on battery (internal) or phantom (external) power. Small size is ideal for applications requiring minimum visibility and/or inhibition.

We offer two choices of broadcast quality tie-clip mic, Audio-Technica’s AT803 above which is fine for most applications, but this one, the AT899, has an even lower profile design (a mere 5mm in diameter) and really assures minimum visibility. It also delivers premium sound performance. The AT899 may be worn as a lavalier and is easily hidden in clothing or hair. It offers the convenience of battery or phantom power, and its switchable low-frequency roll-off reduces popping. All the other lavalier (lapel/tie-clip) microphones we offer here are omnidirectional because that pick-up pattern is commonly accepted as being the correct one for the majority of speech-based recording applications. The reason is because it allows the user to speak while turning their head and still remain within the pick-up pattern. The cannot go "off mic". The Audio-Technica PRO70 has a cardioid pick-up pattern and is a little bigger in size than its counterparts. It is offered here as a budget-conscious option for speech-based recordings where head movement can be kept to a minimum, as well as for guitar or other stringed instrument recording.
Supplied with both a clothing clip and guitar mount, it provides natural and articulate vocal reproduction when used as a clip-on lavalier and excels in pickup of acoustic guitar. The PRO70 is designed to make music and speech clearly and comfortably audible, yet never draw attention to itself or its operation. The microphone is equipped with a low-frequency roll-off switch that allows for reduced pickup of room noise. The versatile PRO70 may be powered by either battery or phantom power. Its cardioid polar pattern reduces pickup of sounds from the sides and rear, improving isolation of the desired sound source. Whilst this may be desirable in some circumstances, please be aware that extreme head movement whilst recording speech may result in the speaker going slightly "off-mic".
To summarise, you should buy an omnidirectional Audio-Technica AT803 or AT899 (above) if you really want to be sure of your speech recordings without worrying about extreme head movement of the speaker (e.g. for lecturers, TV/Film recording, news-gathering). But if you want to save money, and you know the speaker is only going to move their head slightly from side to side while speech recording, then the PR070 will be fine (e.g. narration, fixed position face-to-face interviewing). Audio-Technica’s semi-pro omnidirectional ATR3350 (formerly ATR35S) lavalier (clip-on) miniature condenser mic is fine for field recording on a tight budget with our lower cost recorders equipped with a mini-jack mic input. Its low-profile design assures minimum visibility. It has an integrated 6m (20') cable terminated with a 3.5 mm mini-jack plug; an on/off switch on its power module for convenient operation; and it comes with a tie clip, battery, foam windscreen, and 1/4" (6.35 mm) jack adapter.
