 Single Handed News Gathering
Ever since the world's first development of solid state flash media based portable recording by Maycom, the inventors of solid state sound, with their Mark 1 Easycorder in 1995, this innovative company have continued to focus and invest in small, easy-to-use solid state recorders with cutting edge performance.
This resulted a 'sensibly small' professional MPEG-II / WAV recorder, the HandHeld II, so called because it sits comfortably in the palm of your hand just like your TV remote. Small, but not too small to be fiddly.
Using a single multi-layer circuit board and state-of-the-art electronics in its microphone preamps, limiter, AGC, AD and DA converters, recordings are of astonishing audio quality, better even than more recent recorders made by their competitors. Many people doubt it is possible to record to such a high standard via a small microphone inside such a lightweight device such as this, but when they hear the quality of its recordings their jaws literally drop with amazement!
So far no other solid state recorder maker has bettered the outstanding quality of Maycom's mic preamps in the HandHeld II. They are simply astonishing and the main reason this recorder is quieter and makes more faithful recordings than the others.
A backlit LCD, positive control buttons, all within reach of the thumb of the same hand you use to hold the unit make the HandHeld II so easy-to-operate too.
Due to a wide range of supported audio and file formats the HandHeld II integrates seamlessly with all major broadcast automation systems, enabling you to get your scoop on the air as fast as possible.
Gone are the days of a not-so-reliable mechanical cassette or MD recorder along with all its paraphernalia of an external microphone, cable (usually all twisted up!) and shoulder strap. Then the long-winded transfer and edit of your interview. Now you can slip your HandHeld II in your pocket, complete your assignment, drag-and-drop download the interview to your laptop in seconds and even be editing it with its Field Editor in the back of the cab on the way back to the studio!
How's that for enhanced productivity? No wonder thousands of national, local and freelance radio journalists are using the HandHeld II in the UK and EC. FEATURES • Superb Sound Quality The digital audio quality of the HandHeld II is unmatched in any portable recording device. Besides recording in linear WAV (uncompressed) formats the HandHeld II also records in all bitrates of the MPEG-2 Layer II standard in mono and stereo. To match this high quality of encoding Maycom have used only A-brand components and balanced input amplifiers, as well as the same broadcast quality microphone capsule used by leading German microphone manufacturer, BeyerDynamic, in two of their own studio and news gathering microphones. BeyerDynamic also assisted Maycom in the clever design of the microphone capsule suspension system within the HandHeld II to reduce handling noise to the bare minimum. Of course there is also the option of connecting one or two external microphones for mono and stereo recording.
• Compact Flash Storage Recordings, including their marker information, are stored on a removable Compact Flash card. These cards provide large storage capacities (up to 2Gb) in combination with a very small form factor (about the size of a postage stamp!). The cards carry the DOS file format and audio data can either be downloaded to any PC via USB or be read by a CF-card reader.
• Clever Pre-Record Buffer Switch on your HandHeld II. Slide the red record switch into pre-record mode (thereby arming it). Check and adjust your record level. Meanwhile the pre-record buffer is storing 2/5/10/20/or 30 seconds of audio depending on how you've set it. Never again will you miss that vital moment at the start of an interview. Push the marker button above the red record switch to start the recording and your first marker is placed. The second is automatically placed at the end of the buffered time and another at the end of the recording. You may add markers by pressing that button during record (or replay) to remind you of editing points that may be useful later.
• Fast, Reliable USB Connection The USB interface on both the HandHeld and its Docking Station provides a seamless connection to your PC or studio automation system. If used under Windows, MacOS or Linux the HandHeld II appears as an external disk in your file explorer window or the File/Open menu of your application. No drivers are needed for the latest version of the leading PC and Mac operating systems - it's just 'plug-and-play'. Compatible with all major broadcast automation systems. Marker information and BWF header information fields are available in DAVID, Netia, Dalet, CoStar, Burli and many others.
• SMART Battery System Maycom developed their own proprietary battery pack for the HandHeld II, a SMART battery, which combines a 720mAh NiMH battery pack with a small micro-controller. This keeps track of all the operating parameters of the pack and enables it to provide you with a 100% accurate push-button 'traffic light' reading of the battery power. NiHM means longer charge life and no rechargeable battery pack 'memory effect'. New firmware now means recordings are retained even if you have a power loss while in record! No other stereo capable recorder can boast this feature.
• Docking Station The HandHeld's Docking Station gives you the added convenience of a desktop USB communications station. On return from assignment just pop it into the DS and it your card will be 'seen' by your PC, ready for download. The Docking Station also provides stereo XLR inputs and outputs and an AC/DC (car) adapter/charger. Many users choose to record using their HandHeld II fitted into its Docking Station (it's a nice snug fit) thus enabling them to use it with professional XLR mic/line inputs. Charge your SMART battery either inside your HandHeld when it is the Docking Station's cradle, or charge your spare SMART battery in the DS's own battery compartment when you are on assignment with your HandHeld.
• Wide Range of Accessories Maycom provide many specially designed accessories, including a small pouch case, a reporter kit pouch ("Bum-Bag"), spare USB cable, mono/stereo mic/line cables, Docking Station stand, tripod, and a windshield for outdoor use in high winds, etc. Please see our webshop price list below for the full range.
