This solid state recorder is essentially a simple consumer MP3 device providing reasonable quality audio acquisition for non-critical applications (for instance - websites, college broadcast training, oral history recording, etc.) where MP3 compression is considered acceptable and budget is the prime concern.
The Maycom M-Bird XR-22 MP3 Recorder runs for about 11 hours on a single AA battery and encodes audio onto its internal 512Mb memory. This will store almost 9 hours of mono MP3 audio at 128kbps.
Unlike many MP3 players with line inputs, the Maycom XR-22 can be set to default to recording via the line input. This means you do not have to reset this every time you switch it on.
Downloads are made via a neat fold-out USB socket to send your recordings to your laptop or PC for playback or editing. Unlike Maycom's previous MP3 recorder, this new XR-22 model will mount as a virtual drive in Windows XP/Vista/7 or Mac OS, so there is no need for a separate file manager with this recorder. The Maycom MicTube is a high-quality, professional balanced microphone preamplifier housed in an elongated XLR connector. It is powered by one single AAA battery that will last up to 30 hours. Its purpose is to raise the microphone's output to line level so you can plug it into the line input of the Maycom XR-22 MP3 recorder.
Input gain control is provided via a mini-potentiometer on the side of the MicTube and 3-colour LEDs are also provided to show level and overload readout indication.
The MicTube is not just designed to be used with the XR-22. It can be connected to the line input of any MD, DAT, Cassette, MP3 Recorder, Laptop, PC or Camcorder. Even if your MP3 machine already has a mic input (rare), using a MicTube into the line input will give you a considerably better result, because consumer audio devices almost always have a very poor quality mic preamp.
